Dendrological Atlas Project Status The Dendrological Atlas is nearing completion. Some complications were created by the species concepts published in Flora Neotropica and in the Flora of China, English edition, which lumped several species which we had carefully documented as separate, and simultaneously described and restored several species, which were either not known before or had been lumped such as:
These changes have both negative and positive effects on our work: on one hand we need more support and time to finish it, but on the other hand we are lucky to have a last opportunity to incorporate these rare new taxa into the Atlas just before closing up the documentation. It is important to emphasize, that it belongs to the character of the atlas to illustrate every major species, and varieties independently from its present taxonomic status/evaluation so the atlas would remain standard independently from the currently ruling schools. Field documentation: The field documentation is nearly completed except for a few species. Compilation: Over 5000 photographic detail shots and 2000 detail drawings have been scanned and electronically compiled into atlas page plates. A team of illustrators is working on the remaining detail drawings. Color books: While the atlas work is in progress we have also put together a 500 page book, Fenyk a fld Kr¸l, with color habitat and detail shots of 333 species (1000 shots), 200 complementary photographs and 18 maps. The book is only in Hungarian but it has a short English introduction and a Hungarian-English morphological vocabulary, so it is essentially usable for anyone. We've scanned in some of the page proofs for you to browse Fenyk a fld Kr¸l online. We are also currently hard at work on a larger and more comprehensive color book in English, Conifers Around the World, which is expected to be published in autumn of 2007 by DendroPress. |
